This is the vision we have for the cities of tomorrow, factories will be dissolved into small pieces and then be stacked together into highrise vertical factories. Here we are highlighting the large amount of waste we produce everyday which are decompressed anaerobically and creates methane, a greanhouse gas that is 21 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. Input nowadays 97% of waste ends up in landfills to generate products like water, soil, fertilizer and energy is needed during the process. By inviting various forms of landscape, we then make it a circulated system. The main concept is to let people be aware of the truth that factories run as an important component in natural and urban resources cycle, even factories are part of the nature and city as well, everything we produce will form the new world. For thousands of years, the canal witnesses the changes taking place in Guangzhou, the prosper and the disappearance of Tanka cultural (The Tanka is an ethnic subgroup who have traditionally lived on junks in coastal parts in Southern China). However, under aggressive urbanization, the canal is losing its once important position in citizens' life. The modern construction drives the canal space to confront with multiple problems such as oppression under the bridge, floods occur during rainy season and stifled vitality. The museum displays the history of Donghao Canal and the culture of Tanka people. I adopted the form of Tanka houses and input traditional activities like drama opera and small commerce along the canal to revitalize the canal and the odd space under the bridge. The negative effect mainly displays in the chaotic layout of city's center, the formation of urban village, the lack of green space and oasis, the vanishing of the characteristic landscape. Shunde shares such city pattern as many others. It locates in Guangdong, nearby Hongkong, and used to be the city of waterway transport and hometown of overseas Chinese. However, Huagai street, the once prosperous district in the heart of Shunde, now turned into insipid place. There are several green spaces around the place including Qinghui Garden, a national famous traditional garden, whereas they are not connected or well-organized. We build our unit with wood-like material in the shape of spiral form, to perfectly integrate into the surroundings. We also ultilize lightweight structure to establish our rooms, avoiding damages to the environment. The design analyzes a series of base curves, the transformation of which serves as a generative logic in the form of a unit expressed in the global, local, and micro scale. Incorporation of different calibration techniques native to the function of the robot and the manipulation of ceramic material aims to add another layer of information, embedding an element of the extrusion and printing process into the resulting form. The robot arm performs a pivotal role in specifically customizing every piece, redefining the mass production of modular building materials. From simple sine waves to the more complex Fourier curves, multiple matrices are created to visualize a series of units “built” from said curves. A parametric design program (Grasshopper) is used to provide a flexibility in changing the various factors that affect the geometry such as amplitude, frequency, period, and the limit. The curvatures act as a base to generate an undulating surface which then aggregates into a single unit. The undulation gives the unit a variation of perforation which allow for different lighting conditions and shadows dependent on the base curvature used. The final decision to use the pneumatic system is made based on constancy of the extrusion, predicted quality of the extrusion, and the ability to maintain the necessary force. Air pressure is produced and controlled through an air compressor. It is then directed through a hose to an acrylic tube containing the clay. Then a series of tests were designed to evaluate the multiple variables that exist within the process. Due to the ease in changing the toolpath combined with a highly responsive material, the units can be modified according to their specific purposes. Through this project, we explored three types of structural typologies: the column,wall and arch. The modules' amptitudes are changed to best suit whichever system they are used in while simultaneously highlighting the certain innate qualities of the brick functioning structrally and viewed in certain orientations.
